Fowl pox in roosters, caused by the avipoxvirus, presents with wart-like skin growths (dry form) or white patches in the mouth and throat (wet form)Losses can include reduced egg production in hens and potential mortality in some cases.

Symptoms:
  • Dry Form:

    Wart-like lesions or scabs on unfeathered areas like the comb, wattles, and face.

  • Wet Form:

    White, canker-like lesions in the mouth, throat, and sometimes upper respiratory tract.

    • Eye swelling, crusting, or discharge. 
    • Itching or rubbing of the face. 
    • Weight loss and anorexia (not eating). 
    • Difficulty breathing (open mouth breathing). 
    • In young birds, slower growth. 
    • In laying hens, a drop in egg production. 
Losses:
  • Reduced egg production: Laying hens experiencing fowl pox may lay fewer eggs. 
  • Weight loss and reduced growth: Young birds may experience slower growth and weight gain. 
  • Mortality: While usually low, the wet form can be fatal, particularly if the trachea is blocked. 
  • Economic impact: Reduced egg production and slower growth can negatively impact the overall profitability of a flock. 
Diagnosis and Treatment:
  • Wash wounds with plain water and clean with a clean cloth. Apply ointment (Varola Gel) to the wound with your finger.

The medicine should be applied only once and not again. Apply coconut oil daily on the wounds from the next day until they are clean.

CAUTION: The medicine should not go into the eye otherwise the eye may get damaged.
