Pigeon White Diarrhea-Dropping Symptoms and Treatemnt
Pigeon white diarrhea, often associated with pullorum disease, can lead to significant losses due to increased mortality in young birds and reduced production in adults. Symptoms include lethargy, anorexia, weakness, and whitish fecal pasting around the vent. In severe cases, affected chicks may refuse to walk, lie prostrate, and die.
Symptoms:
- Lethargy and weakness: Affected pigeons may be inactive, sluggish, and appear weak.
- Anorexia: Loss of appetite is a common symptom, leading to weight loss.
- White diarrhea: Loose, watery, and white or yellowish droppings are a key indicator.
- Whitish fecal pasting: Fecal matter may stick to the vent, creating a whitish or yellowish paste.
- Huddling: Pigeons may huddle together or near heat sources in an attempt to stay warm.
- Ruffled feathers: Feathers may appear ruffled or unkempt due to illness.
- Depression: Pigeons may appear depressed or withdrawn.
- Other signs: Loud chirping, closed eyes, and gasping may also be observed.
Losses:
- Increased mortality: Pullorum disease can be fatal, especially in chicks and young birds.
- Reduced egg production: In mature birds, egg production may decrease.
- Poor hatchability: The disease can negatively impact egg hatchability, especially in breeding flocks.
- Unthrifty recovered birds: Birds that recover from the disease may be unthrifty, meaning they may not thrive fully.
- Economic impact: The losses due to mortality, reduced production, and decreased hatchability can significantly impact pigeon keepers and breeders.
Causes and Prevention:
- Salmonella Pullorum:
Pullorum disease is caused by the bacterium Salmonella Pullorum.
- Transmission:
The disease can be transmitted through eggs (vertical transmission) or through direct contact with infected birds or contaminated environments (horizontal transmission).
- Prevention:
Prevention strategies include implementing strict biosecurity measures, such as isolating new birds, disinfecting equipment and premises, and practicing proper hygiene. Vaccination against pullorum disease is also available.
