Pigeon salmonellosis, or paratyphoid, is a serious bacterial infection causing significant losses in pigeon populations. Symptoms include lethargy, weight loss, diarrhea, ruffled feathers, and in severe cases, death. Losses can range from reduced breeding success to complete flock mortality, depending on the severity and speed of diagnosis and treatment.
- Lethargy and Loss of Appetite:
Affected pigeons may become sluggish and disinterested in food, leading to weight loss.
- Diarrhea:
Watery or greenish diarrhea is a common symptom, indicating intestinal damage.
- Ruffled Feathers:
Pigeons may appear ruffled or fluffed-up, indicating they are not feeling well.
- Drooped Wings:
Some pigeons may also exhibit drooping wings as they become weak.
- Swollen Joints:
In some cases, swollen wing and leg joints, or “boils,” may develop, particularly in the case of Salmonella Typhimurium infections.
- Neurological Signs:
In severe cases, neurological signs like circling, head flicking, or twisting of the neck may occur.
- Other Signs:
Additional symptoms may include reproductive problems, such as infertile eggs or early squab death.
- Reduced Breeding Success:
Infected birds may have difficulty breeding or may produce infertile eggs.
- Increased Mortality:
Salmonellosis can cause significant mortality in pigeons, particularly in young birds or those with compromised immune systems.
- Economic Losses:
For pigeon fanciers, losses can include reduced breeding stock, increased veterinary costs, and potential for lost racing pigeons.
- Zoonotic Risk:
While paratyphoid in pigeons may not be directly transmissible to humans, it’s important to maintain good hygiene practices, as some Salmonella serotypes common in pigeons can also be found in humans.
