• Avipoxvirus: Pigeon pox is caused by a virus that’s highly contagious among birds.
• Transmission: The virus spreads through direct contact with infected birds, contaminated surfaces, or insect vectors like mosquitoes.
• Environmental Factors: Factors like overcrowding and poor hygiene can increase the spread. 

Symptoms:

• Skin Lesions:

  The most common sign is the appearance of wart-like growths or scabs on featherless areas of the body, such as the eyelids, beak, legs, and around the vent. 
• Mucosal Lesions:

  In some cases, lesions can also appear in the mouth, pharynx, trachea, and esophagus. 
• Other Symptoms:

  Infected birds may also show signs of lethargy, depression, ruffled feathers, dehydration, and even vision problems or difficulty breathing if the lesions are severe. 
• Forms of the Disease:

  Pigeon pox can manifest in two main forms:

  • Dry form: Characterized by skin lesions and scabs. 
  • Wet form: Involves lesions in the mouth and throat. 

Reasons for pigeon canker:

• Parasite: The primary cause is the protozoan parasite Trichomonas gallinae. 
• Transmission: The parasite spreads through:
  • Direct contact: Infected birds can transmit the parasite to healthy birds through beak-to-beak contact. 
  • Contaminated water: Pigeons can contract the disease by drinking from contaminated water sources. 
  • Contaminated food: Seeds or other food items that have been contaminated by an infected bird can transmit the disease. 
• Stress: Factors like overcrowding, other diseases, or parasitic infestations can weaken a pigeon’s immune system, making them more susceptible to canker. 

Symptoms of pigeon canker:

• Oral Lesions: Yellowish, cheesy plaques or ulcers in the mouth, throat, and crop. 
• Difficulty Swallowing: Lesions can make it painful and difficult for pigeons to eat and drink. 
• Regurgitation: Pigeons may vomit or regurgitate food due to the blockage or irritation caused by the lesions. 
• Lethargy: Infected birds may become weak and inactive. 
• Respiratory Distress: Canker can cause difficulty breathing, leading to gasping or wheezing. 
• Weight Loss: Due to difficulty eating and the infection, pigeons may experience significant weight loss. 
• Other Symptoms: Diarrhea, increased water intake, and watery eyes can also occur.
